VIENTIANE (LAOS), Sept 26 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof emphasised the crucial role of regional collaboration in unlocking ASEAN's energy potential during the 42nd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) here today.

Speaking as the AMEM vice-chairman, Fadillah highlighted that shared efforts were essential to effectively harnessing the region's diverse energy resources.

He said ASEAN has made remarkable strides in energy collaboration, and it is imperative for all of the member countries to continue to build on these successes.

"Our region is rich in diverse energy resources, from plentiful fossil fuels to vast renewable energy potential.

"However, we also encountered several challenges, including energy security, accessibility, and the urgent need to transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy systems," he said.

Fadillah said Malaysia is proud to be part of these initiatives and has witnessed the benefits of regional cooperation first-hand.

The deputy prime minister said Malaysia is committed to sharing its experiences while learning from all ASEAN member countries.

"Whether through advancing the ASEAN Power Grid, enhancing energy efficiency, or increasing our renewable energy capacity, our collaboration is essential to unlocking the full potential of our region," he said.

Hence, Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said the discussions that ASEAN energy ministers will engage in over the next few days will be pivotal in shaping the future of ASEAN's energy landscape.

As Malaysia prepares to assume the Chairmanship of AMEM in 2025, Fadillah said he was deeply humbled by the trust the ASEAN community has placed in Malaysia.

"We look forward to working closely with each of you in the coming year to further strengthen our cooperation and drive forward the region's energy transition agenda.

"It is an exciting time for ASEAN as we collectively explore new technologies, deepen our renewable energy ambitions, and enhance energy access for all our people," he added.

The two-day 42nd AMEM meeting and its Associated Meeting kick off today, held in parallel with the 24th ASEAN Energy Business Forum.

The meeting was chaired by Laos Minister of Energy and Mines Phoxay Sayasone.
