LABUAN, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- The entrepreneurial spirit in Labuan is flourishing as local food businesses continue to dominate, thanks to support from the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI).
Three local entrepreneurs—Elinawati Kalik, 40, Santi Awang, 37, and Shirley Dorina Anak Anthony, 46—are shining examples of resilience and innovation, having showcased their brands at the inaugural Labuan Connect! 2024 event, organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in Kampung Patau-Patau 1 today.
The event, designed to empower local entrepreneurs, highlighted NADI’s five key thrusts: entrepreneurship, lifelong learning, self-well-being, awareness and government initiatives.
Entrepreneurs expressed gratitude for NADI’s role in expanding their market reach and building valuable networks.
Elinawati Kalik: A Sweet Touch with Colek Buah Kak Ely
Elinawati launched her mixed fruit salad business, Colek Buah Kak Ely, in 2021 and has since made a mark on Labuan’s local food scene. Her unique twist on traditional fruit salads, featuring vibrant dressings and creative presentation, has earned her a loyal customer base.
“The guidance and support from NADI have been crucial. I’ve learned how to improve product packaging and explore digital marketing, which has significantly boosted sales,” she told Bernama in an interview today.
Elinawati is now eyeing expansion into Sabah and Sarawak, leveraging the marketing strategies learned through NADI’s support.
Santi Awang: Banana Chips with a Global Reach
Santi Awang’s journey with Aneka Keropok Pisang began in 2012, driven by her passion for turning bananas into a versatile snack. Over the years, her chips have become a sought-after treat not only locally but also in Brunei, Singapore and Japan.
“Breaking into the international market was a challenge, but NADI’s programmes taught me how to navigate export requirements and develop sustainable packaging,” she shared.
Santi now produces a variety of banana chip flavours, including sweet, salted egg, cheese, chocolate and spicy sweet varieties, and plans to incorporate eco-friendly practices into her production process.
Shirley Dorina: Artisanal Cakes and Pastries with a Modern Twist
Shirley Dorina launched Cleys Homemade in 2022, specialising in artisanal cakes and pastries inspired by her love for desserts. Initially serving only Labuan, her brand quickly grew to reach customers in Sabah, Sarawak, and Peninsular Malaysia.
Her vibrant creations, including kek lapis and brownies, have gained popularity for their modern take on traditional recipes.
“NADI has been instrumental in teaching us branding and how to tell our story through our products. It’s not just about baking; it’s about connecting with our customers emotionally,” Shirley said.
With growing demand, Shirley is exploring e-commerce platforms and plans to open a baking studio in Labuan for aspiring bakers.
The one-day event provided a platform for local entrepreneurs to showcase their products, network, and learn from experts.
MCMC’s initiative reflects the government’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurship in Labuan by bridging the gap between local businesses and broader markets.
As these entrepreneurs push boundaries, their success stories highlight the potential of Labuan’s food industry, with hopes of transforming the region into a culinary hub.
“This is just the beginning. With consistent guidance and innovation, we believe these brands can become household names across Malaysia and beyond,” Shirley added.
