KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 (Bernama) -- The unit price index of steel in the country rose by 0.6-2.5 per cent last month compared to September 2025, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia.
Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the highest increase was observed in Perak at 2.5 per cent, followed by Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan (1.7 per cent), as well as Johor and Pahang (1.4 per cent).
“The unit price index of steel and metal sections showed a slight increase in October, with a month-on-month change ranging from 0.3-2.0 per cent in all areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak,” he said in a statement today.
In September, the unit price index of steel recorded a 0.4-1.9 per cent rise compared to the preceding month.
On the unit price index of cement, Mohd Uzir said it remained unchanged in almost all states in October but decreased in Terengganu and Kelantan (-0.2 per cent) and Kota Kinabalu (-0.1 per cent)
He said an annual comparison for the period of October 2024 and October 2025 showed that the unit price index for steel declined from negative 1.7 per cent to negative 7.3 per cent involving most areas in the country.
The highest decrease in the unit price index for steel was seen in Tawau and Sibu (7.3 per cent), followed by Penang, Kedah and Perlis (7.1 per cent).
However, the unit price index of cement increased between 0.5 per cent and 3.9 per cent in October 2025 compared to the same month last year across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.
The highest increase was observed in Tawau (3.9 per cent), followed by Sandakan (3.5 per cent) and Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan (2.7 per cent).
Mohd Uzir also noted the average price per unit of steel, consisting of mild steel round bars and Mycon 60 high-tensile deformed bars, edged up 0.7 per cent to RM3,540.70 per metric tonne in October from RM3,516.11 per tonne in the previous month.
In addition, the average price of Ordinary Portland cement also showed a slight increase (0.4 per cent) with an average price of RM24 per 50 kg bag compared to RM23.90 in September 2025.
The Building Material Cost Index (BCI) for steel bars across all building categories in all areas in the peninsula rose by 0.5-2.5 per cent in October compared to the preceding month.
Steel bar BCI in Sabah recorded an increase of 0.4-1.0 per cent for all building categories in October 2025 versus the previous month.
During the same period, steel bar BCI in Sarawak also registered a slight increase of 0.1-1.0 per cent for all categories of building, he added.
