KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, has instructed his team to prioritise and complete the investigation involving former senior political secretary to the prime minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, and businessman Albert Tei Jiann Cheing within seven days.
Azam confirmed that both individuals have been remanded, adding that the MACC would conduct the investigation professionally and in full accordance with the law.
“The case is being investigated under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009,” he said in a statement today.
Earlier, the Putrajaya Magistrates’ Court granted the MACC’s remand application, allowing Shamsul Iskandar and Tei to be held for six days until Dec 4, 2025.
A source revealed that the remand application was filed to enable investigating officers to gather further evidence and statements related to the case.
"In the remand application submitted to the Putrajaya Magistrates’ Court this morning, the MACC emphasised that the case involves public interest, and the investigation must proceed within a reasonable timeframe.
"Despite objections from the lawyers of both suspects, Magistrate Fatin Muneerah Sofian approved the remand request for six days until Dec 4, 2025. This period is deemed necessary to complete a comprehensive investigation," the source added.
According to the source, the investigation will proceed promptly before being submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further review. Charges are expected to be filed, pending approval of the evidence and testimony by the prosecution.
Yesterday, Shamsul Iskandar, Tei, and Sofia Rini Buyong were detained by the MACC to assist in an investigation into allegations of bribery. It is alleged that Tei provided funds to Shamsul Iskandar in an attempt to recover money previously disbursed to several Sabah assemblymen.
Shamsul Iskandar and Sofia Rini were detained at the MACC headquarters after providing statements, while Tei was arrested at his residence in Puchong.
