23/11/2024 11:12 AM

LABUAN, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- Labuan Connect!, an initiative aimed at harnessing the transformative power of technology to bridge digital divides, foster innovation and empower local communities in Labuan to thrive in the digital era, was launched today.

Ministry of Communications deputy secretary-general (Strategic Communications and Creative Industry) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin emphasised that the programme is more than just an initiative, that it represents a vision and a steadfast commitment to ensure Labuan is at the forefront of Malaysia’s digital transformation.

“Labuan Connect! seeks to bridge the digital gap, promote innovation, and equip our people with the tools and skills they need to succeed in today's digital age.

“This is a mission of inclusivity, progress and empowerment,” Nik Kamaruzaman said when launching  Labuan Connect! at Kampung Patau-Patau 1 here.

Also present was Malaysian National News Agency Chief Executive Officer Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin.

Nik Kamaruzaman outlined five key objectives of the initiative that include expanding digital access by enhancing connectivity across Labuan to ensure everyone, regardless of location or background, have access to resources needed to participate in the digital economy.

He said it is to foster innovation and cybersecurity by introducing the latest technologies while educating communities about the importance of cybersecurity to build trust and resilience in the digital sphere.

He underscored that Labuan Connect! is also aimed at promoting safe internet usage and media literacy by empowering individuals to navigate the digital world responsibly and effectively, especially in an era of widespread misinformation.

“This is an initiative to  empowering local communities by supporting youth, entrepreneurs, and local businesses to adapt and thrive using technology, foster growth and innovation.

“It is to bridge the digital divide by ensuring inclusivity remains central, so no community is left behind as the world progresses technologically.

Nik Kamaruzaman said  this initiative places a special emphasis on youth and entrepreneurs, who are seen as drivers of change and innovation in Labuan.

“Through Labuan Connect!, the government is investing in their future by providing opportunities to learn, grow and lead,” he said.

He also acknowledged the indispensable support from the government, private sector, and community stakeholders, with particular recognition for the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Bernama.

He said that as part of its broader digital inclusion agenda, MCMC has rebranded the People’s Digital Initiative (PEDi) as the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI), effective March 1, 2024.

He said by August 31, 2024, a total of 969 NADI centres would be operational nationwide, serving as critical hubs for bridging the digital divide and empowering communities.

With RM100 million allocated under Budget 2025 to strengthen these centres over the next five years, the government’s commitment to creating a digitally inclusive Malaysia is clear.

Nik Kamaruzaman expressed his aspiration for Labuan to become a thriving digital hub that is globally competitive, innovative, and resilient.

“This launch marks the beginning of a larger mission to drive continuous growth and development in Labuan.

“I urge everyone to actively participate in the initiatives under Labuan Connect! and seize the opportunities it offers,” he said.

He called on stakeholders and strategic partners to collaborate, innovate, and invest in Labuan’s digital future.

“Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient community where technology serves as a bridge to opportunity, progress and unity.”

The launch of Labuan Connect! symbolises the government’s commitment to creating a digitally inclusive future for Labuan and beyond.
