KUCHING, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) is set to spearhead the digital transformation of the state’s construction industry with the adoption of the Building Information Modelling (BIM) system, a revolutionary tool that aims to boost efficiency, reduce errors, and ensure the timely completion of projects.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that as the custodian of the state’s infrastructure, JKR Sarawak had always been at the forefront of innovation, and the adoption of BIM marked another significant step in transforming the construction industry.
“By demonstrating the benefits of BIM, we can inspire the wider construction industry in Sarawak to adopt this transformative approach,” he said during the JKR Sarawak BIM Day 2024 here today.
Uggah said that BIM goes beyond construction by integrating detailed information on building components, maintenance schedules, and lifecycle costs. This makes it an invaluable tool for proactive asset management, minimising downtime, and optimising resource allocation for government-owned infrastructure.
“For the government, this means more effective management of public assets and greater transparency. For the people of Sarawak, it means safer, better-maintained infrastructure that serves their needs for generations to come,” he added.
Uggah, who is also the Sarawak Minister of Infrastructure and Ports Development, said JKR Sarawak must be ready to face the challenges of delivering projects on time, within budget, and meeting quality and safety standards. This is particularly crucial as the department has been entrusted with implementing RM1.3 billion worth of projects next year.
As pioneers in BIM implementation in the state, Sarawak JKR has the opportunity to lead by example and showcase the system’s benefits to inspire broader adoption within the construction industry.
Uggah highlighted Sarawak’s ambitious roadmap, which targets 100 per cent integration by 2030 for projects exceeding RM10 million in buildings and RM100 million in infrastructure.
“BIM is not just a tool for today; it is an investment in the future—a future where Sarawak’s construction industry is recognised as a model of innovation and sustainability,” he said.
