KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- Great Eastern Takaful Berhad (GETB), the leading family takaful operator, remains committed to providing comprehensive health and financial protection for Malaysians while promoting sustainability for shared benefits.
Celebrating its 14th anniversary on Dec 10, GETB reaffirmed its mission to foster mutual assistance within the community.
Recognised as the Best Takaful Solutions Provider 2024 by the Global Islamic Finance Awards (GIFA), GETB plays a significant role in narrowing Malaysia's protection gap. This year, the takaful industry penetration rate increased to 20 per cent, reflecting growing awareness of takaful protection needs.
GETB Chief Executive Officer Shahrul Azlan Shahriman highlighted the company’s focus on inclusivity in its services and products, serving over one million customers from diverse backgrounds.
"Access to protection has become easier through online platforms. We continue to enhance digitalisation efforts to simplify processes for customers and support our 10,000 takaful consultants in serving efficiently," he said in a statement.
Shahrul Azlan added that GETB prioritises lower-income groups (B40) by offering affordable protection plans such as MikroSayang under the Perlindungan Tenang initiative.
"Additionally, GETB serves as the managing body for the government’s free health protection scheme, mySalam, with active promotional activities for the programme.
"Starting Jan 1, 2025, mySalam health protection will expand to include five new critical illnesses such as chronic skin conditions, mental illnesses, rheumatology, thalassemia major, and rare diseases," he said.
To date, mySalam has processed nearly two million claims, benefiting over 1.35 million Malaysians with a total claim value exceeding RM1.08 billion.
He noted that these inclusive initiatives align with the company's Value-Based Intermediation for Takaful (VBIT) strategy and sustainable business operation plans.
In its sustainability efforts, GETB actively conducts corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes such as the GREAT KITARecycle Challenge 2024. This initiative, involving 60 schools, successfully collected over 107 tonnes of recyclable materials within four months.
"Upcycling programmes continue with talks and demonstrations involving more than 12,500 participants, including students and teachers, utilising two-in-one upcycling machines to create new items from recycled plastic," Shahrul Azlan said.
In conjunction with its 14th anniversary, GETB received several prestigious awards, including the Malaysia Initiative Award for Upcycling Programmes from the ESGBusiness Awards 2024, the Best Employer Award from Kincentric, and multiple accolades at the 2024 Human Resources Excellence Awards.
Shahrul Azlan emphasised that GETB will continue strengthening its industry leadership by prioritising sustainability in all aspects of its business operations.
"We remain committed to being the preferred takaful provider for Malaysians," he said.
