EXPOSING PARTNER'S 'AIB' ON SOCIAL MEDIA GOES AGAINST ISLAMIC VALUES – MOHD NA'IM

27/02/2025 06:23 PM

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 27 (Bernama) -- Exposing the ‘aib’ (shame) of one's partner in public, especially on social media, not only damages personal and family dignity but also goes against the teachings of Islam and the noble values upheld in society, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar.

He said that in today’s advanced world, social media was often used to express feelings and share life stories.

"Not everything needs to be shared on social media," he told Bernama concerning a viral video of an influencer challenging her husband to drink breast milk in exchange for money.

Mohd Na'im said that exposing a partner’s shame on social media was not a solution, and so goes for the trend of challenging one's husband, which could lead to slander, hatred, and division within the family and society.

"More concerningly, it can result in the loss of blessings in a marriage and lead to even greater harm, including an uncontrollable number of divorces," he added.

He said that the Office of the Mufti of the Federal Territories had issued an explanation regarding the issue in Bayan Linnas Series 308, which stated that the Egyptian Mufti Department aligned with the Hanafi school of thought, declaring that it was haram for a husband to drink his wife’s breast milk, based on the argument that breast milk was part of the human body.

"The part of the human body cannot be used except in cases of extreme necessity. Therefore, it can be understood that even if a husband and wife are not considered ‘mahram’ (a legal term in Islam signifying a close family relation where marriage is forbidden) due to a technicality, the act of a husband intentionally drinking his wife’s breast milk without a legitimate medical reason is considered inappropriate and unnecessary.

He added that the obligation of breastfeeding a baby under two years old is an important requirement to ensure healthy growth and development, and any action that could undermine a baby’s right to breast milk, including the trend of challenging a husband to drink his wife’s breast milk, was inappropriate and should be avoided.

Mohd Na'im also said that in a narration by Muslim, there was a hadith that taught the importance of safeguarding a partner’s dignity, as marriage was an amanah (trust) that must be preserved.

"I urge all of us to adopt a more mature and responsible approach in addressing marital issues.

"Protect the honour of the family and maintain the husband-wife relationship with love, affection, and patience. Islam teaches us to be a couple that brings happiness according to Islamic law," he said.
