SOLAR LIGHTS TRANSFORM PULAU TUBA, BOOSTING SAFETY, SUSTAINABILITY

02/12/2025 02:53 PM

LANGKAWI, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- The installation of 100 solar lights in Pulau Tuba, Langkawi, marks a significant step towards bridging the development gap between rural and urban areas, enhancing the quality of life for the island’s residents.

Masjid Al-Hijrah Lubuk Chempedak treasurer Faizal Rosli, shared that the solar-powered lights work similarly to conventional electric lamps by Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), but with the added benefit of using solar energy, which makes them both eco-friendly and cost-effective.

“The solar lights have transformed our village. With brighter and safer surroundings, we can now engage in various activities - whether it’s gotong-royong (community work), village meetings, or congregational prayers, more comfortably, even at night,” Faizal told Bernama.

He highlighted the significant impact the lights have had on the cemetery area, which is frequently used for burials at night.

“We are very grateful that the government is attentive to our needs. These lights have made a huge difference,” he added.

The solar light installation is part of the MADANI Adopted Village Programme (KAM), an initiative launched by the government to provide basic infrastructure, economic opportunities, and community spaces in underserved rural areas.

Pulau Tuba was chosen as one of the first KAM villages, with a special allocation of RM2.5 million from the Ministry of Finance, managed by the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA).

The programme aims to develop Pulau Tuba into a key tourist destination while simultaneously improving residents' living standards.

Kampung KEDA Teluk Berembang, chairman, Ahmad Nazri Ramli said the installation has had a noticeable positive effect, especially for children and the elderly, who now feel safer walking at night, whether to attend prayers at the mosque or visit relatives.

"Our village, which has 54 houses, was previously only equipped with street lamps placed far apart. The solar lights have made our village safer by illuminating streets, homes, the surau (prayer hall), and public spaces. This not only improves the overall atmosphere but also reduces the risk of accidents," he said.

Ahmad Nazri also emphasised that the installation of solar lights aligns with the village's commitment to sustainability.

“The lights support a green lifestyle and raise awareness about renewable energy,” he added.

The initiative also has a strong community involvement aspect. “We volunteered as a community to install these lights,” said Pertubuhan Komuniti Anak Tempatan (PEKAT) chairman Ismail Masa.

“Unlike traditional electric lights that rely on TNB, solar lights use free solar energy, which reduces long-term electricity costs for local authorities and residents. They’re easier to install and maintain, too.” he added.

For regular visitors like Zus Amliana Armisah, 46, the infrastructure improvements have made the island even more welcoming.

"Before, we were hesitant to walk at night because some areas were dark and potentially unsafe," said Zus Amliana, a resident of Kampung Padang Matsirat.

“Now, with solar lights on many of the pathways, it's much more comfortable and enjoyable to walk around in the evening,” she added.

She praised the initiative as a smart and strategic move. “This isn't just about convenience and safety. It also supports Malaysia’s sustainable development goals by harnessing clean, renewable energy. It’s a win for the community and the environment.”
