MOE ASSURES NO DIVIDE BETWEEN URBAN, RURAL SCHOOLS IN CO-TEACHING INITIATIVE

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Education Malaysia (MoE) has assured that the co-teaching initiative under the 2027 School Curriculum will not create a divide between urban and rural schools. The programme will be implemented gradually, based on the readiness of each school.

Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said this approach allows school principals the flexibility to decide on the best methods for implementation, considering their schools' needs, capacity, and challenges.

"School principals will have the autonomy to choose the most effective way to implement the co-teaching initiative in their schools,” he said during the question and answer session in the Dewan Negara, responding to Senator Susan Chemerai Anding's question about the readiness of rural and remote schools compared to urban ones.

Wong acknowledged that some schools face challenges, such as a lack of teachers or facilities. To address this, the MoE is providing flexibility to ensure the programme is not burdensome or uneven across schools.

“We are giving school principals the freedom to implement initiatives that will best benefit our children,” he added.

Wong also stressed that the co-teaching initiative would not cause performance differences between schools. Even schools that are still using traditional teaching methods, like a single teacher for new subjects, will not be left behind.

He also assured that the ministry would ensure all teachers receive adequate training to implement the core elements of the new curriculum, including three new integrated subjects: Alam dan Manusia (Level 1, 2027), Eksplorasi Sains dan Teknologi (Level 2, 2029), and Eksplorasi Seni dan Dunia (Level 2, 2029).

“MoE will make sure all teachers are prepared to deliver the initiatives and core components of the 2027 School Curriculum for the benefit of the pupils,” he said.

Co-teaching is a pedagogical approach where two teachers work together to plan, implement, and assess learning, specifically for new subjects that are transdisciplinary and require hands-on activities and project-based learning.
