KUANTAN, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- A student who swam through floodwaters to reach the hostel and sit for the 2025 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination is now safe.

The Pahang State Education Department (JPN) in confirming the incident said the student has been placed in the hostel of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kuala Lanar, Kuala Lipis, and is ready to sit for the exam with other candidates.

“An investigation revealed that the student’s route was rapidly submerged by floodwaters, forcing him to wade through the water to reach the hostel last Saturday,” it said in a statement.

In anticipation of such challenges, Pahang JPN and the District Education Office (PPD), in collaboration with nearby residential schools in Lipis, had already put in place a contingency plan. This plan identified students living in flood-prone areas and arranged hostel accommodation for those who do not normally reside there.

The measure was taken to ensure that all candidates could sit for the SPM exam without any difficulties, despite the flood situation.

PPD and the schools are continuously monitoring the situation, prioritising the safety and well-being of candidates as they prepare for their exams during the monsoon season.

In the same statement, Pahang JPN expressed appreciation to the school staff, PPD, the security teams, and all parties involved in ensuring that the SPM exam could proceed smoothly for the benefit of the students.

Earlier, a video of the student swimming through the flood to reach the hostel went viral, receiving a range of reactions from the online community. The student’s determination to reach the hostel despite the flood has captured the hearts of many.
