KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC) has been recognised for its smart healthcare initiatives by winning the Technology and Innovation Excellence Award at the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) Business Excellence Awards 2025.
SMC in a statement today said the award is presented to an organisation that has successfully sought new solutions with the help of the application of digital, innovative, or disruptive technologies, most specifically in the last three years.
“This recognition highlights the hospital’s continuous efforts in pioneering digital advancements to enhance its clinical and operational efficiency, supporting Malaysia’s move towards digital healthcare,” the statement said.
Chief Executive Officer of Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City, Dr Seow Vei Ken said the hospital’s approach is to bring in new cutting-edge technologies and digitalise healthcare services throughout the years, elevating patient experience, improving operational efficiency, and enhancing the working environment for SMC’s clinical team.
“As healthcare technology continues to evolve, this recognition encourages us to continue that momentum to always raise the bar and being at the forefront of smart healthcare in Malaysia,” he said in the statement.
SMC said it has consistently introduced various technologies and innovations, including robotics, precision medicine as well as automation, and has also further accelerated efforts for digitalisation and AI (Artificial Intelligence) integration into its operations.
This includes the adoption of Malaysia’s first automated microbiology laboratory specimen processing system - Walk Away Sample Processor (WASP), Cloud Based Hospital Information Systems and Electronic Medical Records (HIS/EMR) with Computerised Physician Order Entry (CPOE), Outpatient Pharmacy Automation System (OPAS) and Annalise AI for Radiology Imaging.
“The hospital has also introduced advanced robotic technologies across several clinical services, including the Mako SmartRobotics system, the ROSA® Knee System and the VELYS™ Robotic Assisted Solution, which support a range of joint replacement procedures.
“Besides that, Southeast Asia’s first commercial installation of the AiBLE™ Spine Surgical Systems for precision spinal procedures and the first in Malaysia to have the da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System used for minimally invasive procedures across multiple clinical specialties,” SMC said.
SMC also said that the recognition has further underscored its recent achievement in Newsweek's World's Best Smart Hospitals 2026 ranking, where it emerged as one of the world’s top 350 hospitals and number one hospital in Malaysia.
According to SMC, as of this year, it is home to more than 300 medical consultants, 80 medical specialities and supported by 28 Centres of Excellence.
“It is also the pioneer hospital in Malaysia to obtain three major hospital-wide accreditations; the Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation Gold Seal of Approval from the United States of America, the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) International, and the Malaysian Society of Quality in Health (MSQH),” the hospital said.
Launched in 2018, the BMCC Business Excellence Awards commemorate the long-standing commercial ties shared between the United Kingdom (UK) and Malaysia.
It recognises and honours the best of UK and Malaysian businesses across a range of award categories.
