ADUN QUESTIONS MBAS PROPERTY TAX REASSESSMENT

11/11/2025 08:35 PM

ALOR SETAR, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- Bakar Arang assemblyman Adam Loh Wei Chai has raised questions over the Alor Setar City Council’s (MBAS) plan to reassess property taxes, asking why gradual increases were not implemented over the years.

Loh noted that some residents have reported sharp jumps in their property tax bills under the latest assessment, citing a homeowner whose bill rose from RM300 last year to RM700 this year.

“Perhaps a gradual increase over time could have eased the adjustment for residents,” he said during the 2026 Kedah Budget debate at the State Legislative Assembly here today.

He added that any reassessment should be transparent and accompanied by clear explanations, relevant data and a reasonable transition period, so residents understand the rationale behind the changes.

“I understand that this increase is a process that needs to be undertaken. The government can raise taxes, but it should do so gradually and provide clear explanations that show consideration for the people’s concerns,” Loh said.

He said the process should also be considerate, as many families are counting every ringgit just to cover basic needs and must sometimes choose between paying rent or school fees for their children.

“Is this the right time to raise taxes?” he asked.
