GEORGE TOWN, Nov 12 (Bernama) -- Penang's title as a 'Food Paradise' has been officially endorsed by the Michelin Guide 2026, with the state capturing a stunning 74 listings, nearly half of all 151 eateries recognised nationwide.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said this remarkable achievement further solidifies Penang's reputation as a ‘Food Paradise’, showcasing the depth and richness of its diverse culinary culture.
“Among these, two earned a Michelin Star, 39 were recognised as Michelin Selected and 33 received the Bib Gourmand distinction.
“Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur and Penang are evenly matched, with each contributing eight new entrants to the list.
"In Penang, this includes three new Bib Gourmand and five new Michelin Selected restaurants. These achievements continue to enrich Malaysia’s culinary landscape and affirm the strength and heritage of Penang’s gastronomy,” he said in a statement today.
He noted that 84 restaurants received Michelin Selected recognition, including 11 newcomers, with Penang contributing five new entries this year, bringing its total to 39, while Kuala Lumpur added six, reaching 45 in total.
Among the five new Michelin Selected restaurants in Penang are Blacklinen, Du-An (Lebuh Pantai), Mémoire, Peninsula House and Sood by Chef Ton, each showcasing creative interpretations of local and international cuisines.
Wong said all Michelin Star holders from the 2025 edition maintained their status this year, with two restaurants upgraded from Michelin Selected to one-star recognition in the 2026 edition.
“For Penang, Au Jardin and Auntie Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery have retained their Michelin Stars, reaffirming their consistent quality and culinary excellence,” he said.
Wong emphasised that Penang’s continued performance on the Michelin stage reflects the state’s successful integration of rich culinary culture with international recognition.
