KEDAH PERHILITAN LOOKING INTO ALLEGED TIGER SIGHTING IN KULIM

KULIM, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- The Kedah Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) is looking into an alleged tiger sighting at Kampung Selarong Panjang, Mahang near here.

Its director, Dr Abdul Malek Mohd Yusof said he and four of his department’s Malayan Tiger Conservation Unit members also located a villager who claimed to have spotted the tiger at about 11.35 am today.

"The complainant claimed to have seen the tiger on his way home in a vehicle, about 2.30 am along Jalan Kampung Selarong-Mahang, but we could find no signs of the tiger’s presence in the area when we conducted our investigation.

“I don’t deny the possibility that the area is where the tiger roams based on the faded paw print found in the area where the villager claimed to have seen the animal," he said when contacted by Bernama today.

He said that the unit would continue to monitor the area, which is surrounded by rubber and oil palm plantations as well as orchards, to identify any tiger trails or to detect their presence, and has advised the villager to notify the department if there was a repeated sighting.

The area is six kilometres (km) from Ulu Paip Forest Reserve and 22 km from Gunong Inas Permanent Forest Reserve, he added.
