LABUAN MEDIA DELEGATION VISITS RM264 MILLION MAIWP TOWER

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- A 10-member delegation from the Labuan Media Practitioner Association today made an official visit to the iconic RM264 million MAIWP Tower, located at Lorong Haji Husein 2 in the heart of the city.

The visit, organised by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) Labuan, provided an opportunity for the media practitioners to learn about the council’s operations and initiatives.

During the briefing, MAIWP acting chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Nizam Yahya shared details about the construction and unique architecture of the 24-storey building, inspired by the shape of bamboo shoots. Built on a 0.2-hectare plot, the tower was completed and officially occupied in August 2023.

Mohd Nizam also outlined MAIWP’s key roles which include managing zakat (tithes), waqf (endowment), human capital development, property management, and investment, while highlighting the council’s efforts to alleviate poverty among the asnaf (tithe recipients) in the Federal Territories through various schemes, which collectively cost MAIWP approximately RM1.1 billion annually.

Acknowledging the challenges faced in distributing zakat effectively to ensure it reaches qualified recipients, Mohd Nizam emphasized MAIWP’s commitment to addressing these issues while maintaining transparency and accountability.

The media association delegation was led by its president Jainudi Djimin.

Concluding the visit, the delegation toured the Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP) in Taman Shamelin, Cheras, gaining further insights into MAIWP’s operations and community outreach efforts.
