JASIN, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- A proposal to construct a flood mitigation project at Sungai Rambai will be submitted to the Melaka state government as a measure to overcome flooding in the area, Sungai Rambai assemblyman Siti Faizah Abd Azis.

She stressed that there was a need for a long-term solution as several areas are prone to floods, especially the low-lying areas and those near the river.

"We have held a study and discussions with related departments and agencies, including the local authorities and the district and land office to determine the measures that can be taken so that it can be brought to the state government and then the federal government.

"We will also look at the need to build the flood mitigation project as the same project has been done in Merlimau and Jasin, so it’s time that it has to be done in Sungai Rambai as we have the Sungai Kesang here,” she told reporters here today after visiting flood evacuees at the relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Parit Penghulu.

She also shared that the state government had implemented various measures, including upgrading the drainage and irrigation system, replaced water pumps and constructed bunds in the Sungai Rambai state constituency to overcome flooding.

She said that in the last three years, these efforts have brought a positive impact as flooding in hotspots have reduced in the period of a year.

Meanwhile, flood evacuee Nur Hidayu Buami, 41, related that she had been at the centre since noon yesterday after her house in Kampung Janda Berhias was flooded due to continuous rain since yesterday.

She said she had not problems with floods for almost two years, but it was raining so much this week that it caused her home to flood.

"Previously my family frequently had to evacuate, but after various efforts, like pumping water, upgrading the drainage, floods rarely hit us anymore.

"Since last week, we have prepared by tidying up our items to place at higher ground as it was raining nearly everyday and causing water to enter my home,” she added.
