SEPANG, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- The Selangor government has over 1,000 temporary relief centres (PPS) on standby to ensure the welfare and safety of flood victims, said state executive councillor Jamaliah Jamaluddin.

Speaking to reporters after visiting flood evacuees at the Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Salak PPS today, she said only about five percent of the centres are in use, with nine open in the Sepang district.

She reported that the SK Kampung Baharu Lanjut PPS in Sepang has the highest number at 297 people, while the SK Salak PPS is sheltering 182 people.

"Selangor Menteri Besar (Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari) is deeply concerned and has directed all executive councillors to assess the situation and the needs of victims firsthand.

"I met with several victims, including pregnant women and the elderly, and listened to their concerns. I explained that the state government has already allocated funds to manage floods for this year and next year," she said.

As of noon today, 33 PPS remain open in Selangor, accommodating 4,433 evacuees from 1,227 families, according to the www.infobencanajkm website.

It showed that 14 PPS are operating in Kuala Selangor, nine in Sepang, five in Kuala Langat, three in Sabak Bernam and two in Klang.

“The centres will only be closed when it is completely safe for evacuees to return home,” she said.

Jamaliah added that the Selangor government remains highly attentive to flood issues, with a focus on implementing flood mitigation projects as a long-term strategy.

To support this effort, the Selangor government has requested MPs in affected areas to communicate these proactive measures to their constituents, ensuring everyone is informed.

She also noted that the standard operating procedures at all PPS are functioning well, with necessary arrangements made in advance to ensure smooth operations.

The Selangor government has also mobilised over 300 logistical assets, including operational machinery and 200 boats, for deployment throughout the flood season.
