ALOR SETAR, Nov 28 (Bernama) -- A man has expressed his gratitude after his wife and children were found safe after a week of being unreachable due to recent flooding in Hat Yai, Thailand.
Shahrizal Kamarudin, 43, from Ampang, Selangor, said he felt immense relief when he finally reunited with his wife, Maimuna Asnan, 37, and their four children, aged between five and 15, at 10.30 am yesterday (9.30 am Thai time).
“After leaving the temporary relief centre at Hatyairatprachasun School on Thursday (Nov 27), I went to Central Hatyai to seek help from volunteer firefighters. They took me in a four-wheel-drive vehicle to reach my family’s homestay, but unsafe roads forced us to turn back, even though we were almost there.
“Yesterday morning, a rescuer asked where my wife was staying. Half an hour later, they arrived and told me the area was badly affected and the homestay was empty, which made me even more anxious,” he told Bernama today.
Shahrizal added that shortly afterwards, he received a video showing his wife and children being rescued, taking turns on motorcycles, and eventually arriving at a hotel.
“I went there straight away. My wife seemed a little down, but the kids were cheerful, as usual. They even laughed at me when they saw I was still in the same clothes.
“Thankfully, they were all fine, just a little hungry. Rescuers took them to a nearby shop to get something to eat,” he said.
Shahrizal said he had been anxious when he couldn’t reach his family, especially after being told that floodwaters had risen to the upper levels of their homestay.
He said that he, his family, and a friend were in Danok attending to his car, which was also affected by the flood, adding that they would return to Ampang once it was all sorted.
“This was our first time coming here for a family holiday, but we ended up caught in a flood. I see it as a test from Allah and accept it with patience. It’s something our family will never forget,” he said.
