KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed Malaysia’s deep concern over the ongoing developments in Syria, stressing the importance of a peaceful transition that respects the country’s diverse communities.

Advocating that "violence must be firmly rejected", Anwar emphasised that unity should be embraced as the foundation for a unified and peaceful nation.

"We are, of course, deeply concerned about developments in Syria and are monitoring the situation on a daily basis.

"We call for a peaceful transition that respects Syria's diverse communities," he said during his address at the opening of the Strategic Vision Group: Russia-Islamic World meeting here on Wednesday.

"Sectarian divides must be rejected, and unity must be embraced as a guiding principle for rebuilding the nation. We have a duty to support an independent and united Syria," he said, calling for international solidarity in addressing the crisis.

The Group of Strategic Vision "Russia – Islamic World" meeting, themed Russia and the Islamic World: Cooperation in an Emerging Multipolar Era, brought together over 200 influential participants, including from government bodies, political and spiritual leaders, and public figures from 32 countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, as well as international organisations.

The primary objective of the event was to discuss the prospects for relations between the Russian Federation and Muslim countries amid the rapidly changing international landscape, with a focus on defining parameters for interaction in the evolving multipolar world.
