09/12/2025 04:56 PM

TOKYO, Dec 9 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- More than 10 aftershocks were recorded in Japan within 14 hours following the strong 7.5-magnitude earthquake in the country’s north, data derived from the Japan Meteorological Agency revealed on Tuesday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

A total of 14 tremors were recorded, with magnitudes ranging from 3.6 to 6.4 and depths between 10 and 50 kilometres (km).

The 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit northern Aomori Prefecture, prompting a tsunami warning along the northeastern coast of Honshu Island and the eastern coast of Hokkaido Island.

The tsunami's maximum height reached 70 centimetres. The warning was lifted approximately six hours after the quake.

The quake, centred 54 km beneath the seabed off Aomori’s eastern coast, registered a level of over six on Japan’s seven-point intensity scale. Thirty people were injured.

For the past week, the Japanese government and meteorological authorities had warned of a heightened risk of a major earthquake striking northern Hokkaido and the Sanriku region in northeastern Japan.
