KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 27 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s Producer Price Index (PPI), which measures price changes at the producer level, rose by 0.8 per cent year-on-year in January 2025, extending the 0.5 per cent increase recorded in December 2024, said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

This increase was mainly driven by the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector, while mining and manufacturing sectors saw marginal declines.

Chief statistician, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin noted that the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector grew 16.5 per cent year-on-year in January 2025, compared to a 23.8 per cent increase in December 2024.

"The growing of perennial crops index remained the main contributor, rising by 29.4 per cent," he said.

Meanwhile, the mining sector remained on a downward trend, contracting by 1.3 per cent (December 2024: -7.0 per cent), with declines in crude petroleum and natural gas output.

The manufacturing sector decreased by 0.6 per cent, a smaller contraction compared to a one per cent decline in the previous month, he shared.

On a month-on-month basis, Mohd Uzir said PPI local production registered a 0.3 per cent increase in January 2025, slowing from 0.8 per cent in December 2024.

Elaborating further on the PPI local production by stage of processing, he said the crude materials for further processing index rose 2.4 per cent year-on-year, up from 1.9 per cent in December 2024.

“This increase was mainly attributed to the non-food materials index, which rose by 3.1 per cent,” he said.

DOSM added that a comparison of selected countries showed that the United States' PPI rose by 3.5 per cent, Japan’s by 4.2 per cent, the United Kingdom's by 0.3 per cent, while China's PPI continued to decline by 2.3 per cent.
