IPOH, Feb 25 (Bernama) -- A talented team from Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) has earned a prestigious second-place finish at the Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM) Student Simulation competition held in Singapore in conjuction with the IEOM International Conference 2025.
UTP in a statement today said that competing against 47 teams worldwide, their students Yuvanesh Jeva and Ira Elisa Lajium, both from the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering programme, and team leader Sivainesh Devi Remesh, a student from the Master in Mechanical Engineering programme, showcased their expertise in simulation modelling and problem-solving, emerging among the top three finalists.
"The rigorous two-round competition began with teams submitting simulation models and reports for evaluation. The top three finalists then presented their solutions, with UTP competing against two teams from Temasek Polytechnic Singapore.
The UTP team's presentation, covering an executive summary, model validation, and efficiency improvements for an inefficient transportation system, was praised as the best of the competition, securing them a well-earned runner-up position," the statement said.
UTP also noted that the case study challenged teams to model an inefficient transportation system with four buildings surrounding a lake.
Each building had designated bicycles and a buggy for staff, with one building also providing buggy access for visitor lake tours. The goal was to simulate inefficiencies and propose improvements.
Meanwhile Sivainesh said competing against the best in the world was an invaluable experience. Our team poured their heart and soul into this competition, and we're thrilled with what we accomplished," she said.
The team adviser Dr Shuib Husin said the achievement showcases the strength of UTP’s engineering and analytical training.
"Our students demonstrated their ability to compete at a high level, and we are incredibly proud of their success. We look forward to seeing the impact they make in the future," he added.
