BANGKOK, 15 March (Bernama) -- Five people were confirmed dead and at least 27 others injured when a construction crane for an expressway project collapsed in Bangkok’s Chom Thong district early Saturday morning.

Fire and rescue personnel, along with teams from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department and the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, evacuated dozens of people from the accident site, including some who were stranded on the crane.

According to Thai authorities, the construction crane collapsed near the entrance to the Dao Khanong Expressway, causing a concrete beam under construction to fall, crushing sections of the expressway and several workers.

“At least five men were killed in the incident, which occurred at approximately 1.40 am (local time). The collapse happened about 200 metres from the expressway entrance when a concrete beam fell onto an existing expressway structure,” authorities said on Saturday.

Authorities stated that investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing, while the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) continues to assess the extent of the damage.
