SEOUL, April 6 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- The South Korean government said on Sunday it has decided to grant long-term residency status to three Indonesian nationals who helped evacuate senior citizens from the recent wildfires in the country's southeastern region, Yonhap News Agency reported.
The justice ministry earlier said it is considering issuing an F-2 visa for an Indonesian sailor, known by his name Sugianto, who helped save around 60 aged people from the deadly wildfire in Uiseong County, North Gyeongsang Province.
An F-2 visa that guarantees long-term residency to its holder can be granted by the justice minister to a foreign national who has made "special contributions" to South Korea or is recognised for the role in promoting the public interest.
"(The government) has decided to grant residency status for special contributions to three Indonesians who helped evacuate aged people from the wildfires," said Lee Han-kyung, deputy chief of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters.
Except Sugianto, no details of the two other Indonesian nationals were available.
