SOUTH KOREA TENTATIVELY SETS JUNE 3 FOR PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

07/04/2025 11:10 AM

SEOUL, April 7 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- The South Korean government has tentatively decided to hold a presidential election on June 3 to elect a successor to former President Yoon Suk Yeol, with the schedule expected to be confirmed at a Cabinet meeting this week.

A senior government official told Yonhap News Agency that Acting President Han Duck Soo is expected to finalise the election date during a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

“Given the significance of the matter and the consideration of designating the election day as a temporary public holiday, the decision will be approved during the Cabinet meeting,” the official said.

A presidential election is legally required to be held within 60 days following the Constitutional Court’s removal of Yoon from office last Friday over his failed attempt to impose martial law.

If the June 3 schedule is confirmed, prospective candidates must register by May 11, and the official campaign period will begin on May 12.

Under election law, any public servant intending to run for president must resign at least 30 days before the election, making May 4 the deadline for such resignations.

The newly elected president will assume office immediately following the announcement of the election results without forming a transition team.
