JAKARTA, April 15 (Bernama) -- Former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will always be remembered as a key figure in fostering strong relations between journalists from Malaysia and Indonesia, according to the Indonesia chapter of the Malaysia-Indonesia Journalists Friendship Association (ISWAMI).
ISWAMI Indonesia President Asro Kamal Rokan said Abdullah initiated the formation of ISWAMI in 2003. The forum has since served as a bridge between media professionals in both countries, contributing to mutual understanding and regional harmony within the Nusantara community.
He recalled memorable meetings with Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister, fondly known as "Pak Lah", in Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta.
“Pak Lah was known for his kind personality—gentle, polite, and respectful,” he told Bernama.
Asro also highlighted Abdullah’s strong commitment to promoting Islam Hadhari, a vision of progressive Islam inspired by the golden era of Andalusia, particularly in science, intellectualism, and culture.
“I was shocked to hear of his passing,” added Asro, who previously served as General Manager of Indonesia’s national news agency, ANTARA, from 2005 to 2007.
Abdullah passed away on Monday at the age of 85. He served as Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister from 2003 to 2009.
His remains will be laid to rest with full state funeral honours on Tuesday.
