TAPAH, April 18 (Bernama) -- Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has called on young and first-time voters to fulfil their responsibility by casting their ballots in the Ayer Kuning state by-election on April 26.

He said as newly registered voters who were automatically added to the electoral roll upon reaching the age of 18, this group must understand their important role in choosing the elected representative for the constituency.

“We do not want to see the voter turnout percentage fall below 50 per cent,” he told reporters on the campaign trail to draw support for BN’s candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir here today.

Mohamad, who is also UMNO deputy president, expressed hope that voter turnout in the Ayer Kuning by-election would exceed 70 per cent.

On the party machinery’s performance during the first week of campaigning, he said he was satisfied with the smooth and well-coordinated efforts to win voter support.

The by-election is a three-cornered contest involving Mohamad Yusri, Abd Muhaimin Malek of Perikatan Nasional and Bawani KS from Parti Sosialis Malaysia.
