FOUR STUDENTS KILLED AS WATER TANK WALL COLLAPSES AT INDONESIAN BOARDING SCHOOL

JAKARTA, April 26 (Bernama) -- Four students were killed and 11 others injured after the wall of a water storage tank collapsed at an Islamic boarding school in Central Java, Indonesia, officials said.

The incident at around 10.30 am local time on Friday at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor in Magelang Regency, as students were preparing to bathe before school activities.

“A total of 29 students were affected by the collapse. Of these, 25 were successfully rescued, although 11 sustained injuries and were immediately taken to the nearest healthcare facility.

“Meanwhile, four others were buried beneath the rubble," said BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari stated in a statement.

Rescue teams from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Magelang and other emergency services were dispatched to the scene.

“As a result, the victims were evacuated one by one: the first at 6.00 pm, the second at 7.20 pm, the third at 8.00 pm, and the fourth at 11.20 pm, on the same day,” he explained.

A joint team, including school staff, is continuing to clear the heavy debris from the area while the cause of the collapse remains under investigation.
