SINGAPORE, April 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia, as the current ASEAN Chair, has played an important role in coordinating the regional bloc’s response to the recent earthquake in Myanmar, said Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
Wong said he spoke with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Tuesday about the humanitarian situation following the disaster.
“He visited Thailand recently and updated me on the humanitarian situation following the devastating earthquake. In these uncertain times, regional unity matters more than ever,” Wong posted on social media.
A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on March 28, leaving more than 3,700 people dead.
During his working visit to Thailand, Anwar met with the chairman of Myanmar's State Administration Council, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, and also held a virtual meeting with the leader of Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG), Mahn Win Khaing Than, to discuss efforts to restore normalcy in the country after the disaster.
Following the meetings, both Myanmar leaders pledged to extend the ceasefire in the country and ensure the safety of humanitarian workers.
Anwar on Tuesday called for an extension of the ceasefire in Myanmar, which will end on April 30.
He stressed that the truce is essential to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance to all affected communities.
