JAKARTA, May 12 (Bernama) -- At least 13 people, including four soldiers, have been killed in an explosion during the destruction of expired ammunition in Indonesia’s West Java province, officials say.
The blast occurred at around 9.30 am local time on Monday in a remote area of Garut district, where the Indonesian Army routinely disposes of unserviceable munitions.
Head of Army’s Information Centre, Brigadier General Kristomei Sianturi, said all victims were evacuated from the site in Sagara village, Cibalong, and taken to Pameungpeuk Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
An investigation is ongoing into the incident’s cause, and authorities are continuing to secure and clear the area amid concerns that more explosives may still be present.
