SRI VIJAYA PURAM (INDIA), Nov 16 (Bernama) -- AirAsia has become the first international airline to offer direct flights to India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The budget carrier’s inaugural flight from Kuala Lumpur landed at the Veer Savarkar International Airport in Sri Vijaya Puram (formerly known as Port Blair), the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, at around 10:30am local time on Saturday.
AirAsia Malaysia managing director Datuk Captain Fareh Mazputra said the new route from Kuala Lumpur is part of the airline’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its presence in India, one of its largest and fastest-growing markets.
“This marks an important milestone in our efforts to expand our footprint in India.
“Our vision is to continue improving connectivity with affordable fares across Asia,” he said in a statement today.
Fareh added that the new route supports the Indian government’s goal of attracting more than 10 million international tourists by the end of this year.
AirAsia is offering over 1,000 seats on this route, with six round-trip flights per week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
To mark the launch, AirAsia is offering promotional fares starting at RM199 for round-trip tickets, available from November 15.
