BARCELONA (SPAIN), March 7 (Bernama) - Malaysia firmly established its presence on the global technology stage at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2025 with an impressive showcase of innovation and digital advancements.
Representing Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching led a two-day working visit to the prestigious event, where she expressed pride in Malaysia’s technological strides and growing influence in the industry. She highlighted Malaysia’s remarkable presentation at the annual congress, particularly through the Malaysia Pavilion and the Sarawak Pavilion, both of which underscored the country’s potential in the digital economy.
Notably, Malaysia stood as the only ASEAN nation with a dedicated pavilion at MWC Barcelona 2025, further solidifying its leadership in the region’s digital transformation.
The Malaysia Pavilion also highlighted the country’s ASEAN Chairmanship, reinforcing its commitment to fostering regional cooperation in the digital economy.
“I feel very proud of the Malaysia Pavilion, and of course, a big congratulations to the Sarawak Pavilion as well. They truly showcased what we have achieved in Malaysia and the immense potential of Sarawak,” Teo told Bernama.
Other notable country pavilions at MWC Barcelona 2025 included Italy, the United Kingdom (UK), South Korea, Spain, and Belgium.
Global use
During her visit, Teo engaged with leading global technology giants such as Intel, Huawei, ZTE and Ericsson. She noted that Ericsson had chosen Malaysia as a demonstration site for its latest innovations - a testament to the country’s growing role as a technological hub.
“Ericsson showcased what they have developed in Malaysia, and I am incredibly proud that Malaysia has been used as their demo case. This not only highlights their capabilities but also Malaysia’s role in enabling cutting-edge advancements,” she shared.
Teo also acknowledged ZTE’s GSMA Foundry Innovation Award for its ‘Minimalist Private 5G for Entertainment’ - the solution that was deployed at the broadcast of Malaysia's 2024 Sukma Games - at the Global Mobile (GLOMO) Awards during MWC Barcelona 2025.
5G key to further growth
Teo further emphasised the importance of embracing emerging technologies, particularly in the realm of 5G, acknowledging Malaysia’s impressive 82 per cent 5G coverage in populated areas but noting that enterprise adoption of the technology remains limited. “Our 5G coverage is quite impressive. However, most usage is currently consumer-based. I think it is time for us to explore how 5G can revamp our industries and bring greater efficiency through enterprise applications,” she remarked.
Reflecting on her discussions with technology leaders, Teo stressed the need for Malaysia to accelerate its digital transformation to remain competitive on the global stage.
“By visiting all these booths, we have seen how 5G can be leveraged by enterprises to drive innovation. Malaysia must catch up and ensure that we can showcase to the world how 5G is transforming our industries,” she said.
Crucial platform
Teo said MWC Barcelona 2025 continued to be a pivotal platform for Malaysia to engage with global technology leaders, attracting investment and fostering collaborations that will drive the nation’s digital economy forward. With strong representation and a clear vision, Malaysia is poised to strengthen its position as a leader in the global technology landscape, she concluded.
MWC Barcelona 2025 is the world’s largest mobile industry event, bringing together key players in telecommunications to showcase innovations, discuss industry trends, and foster global partnerships. The 19th edition in Barcelona this year saw the Malaysia Pavilion showcasing the country's technological advancements and its role in driving progress through 5G deployment, digital infrastructure, and collaborative innovation in the ASEAN region.
As Malaysia leads ASEAN in digital transformation, the pavilion provides an essential platform for the world to witness the country’s capabilities in telecommunications.
