LABUAN, March 20 (Bernama) -- The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Malaysia (CILTM) Sabah Section has been tasked by CILT Malaysia to drive the growth and development of Labuan’s logistics and transport industry.

CILTM Sabah chairman Daniel Doughty said the mandate includes providing industry insights and policy recommendations to help strengthen Labuan’s position as a regional logistics and transhipment hub.

He said this following a courtesy visit to Labuan Corporation chief executive officer Mohd Sukuran Taib at Wisma Perbadanan Labuan on Wednesday.

“Aligned with CILT Malaysia’s broader vision, CILTM Sabah is committed to supporting Labuan’s economic development and ensuring the local logistics and transport sector remains competitive, resilient, and forward-looking,” he said in a statement to Bernama today.

Doughty, who is also the Labuan Chamber of Commerce (LCC) chairman, highlighted LCC’s past achievements, ongoing projects, and future plans, underscoring its commitment to fostering impactful collaborations.

“Discussions centred on strengthening partnerships between stakeholders to advance LCC members' interests and contribute to Labuan’s economic resilience,” he said.

Doughty pointed out that a key initiative discussed was participation in the Sabah Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition (SOGCE) 2025, in July.

“Recognising the strategic importance of the oil and gas sector, both LCC and Labuan Corporation should explore opportunities to engage with industry players and position Labuan as a key hub for oil, gas, and related services," he noted.

The meeting also proposed a Maritime and Logistics Forum and field trip in Labuan this August, aiming to bring together industry leaders, policymakers, and academics to discuss emerging trends, infrastructure development, and investment opportunities in logistics, transhipment, and the oil and gas sector.

Doughty emphasised the importance of positioning Labuan as a premier logistics and maritime hub, leveraging CILT’s expertise and industry networks to drive meaningful progress.

“Another key issue discussed was the need for stronger collaboration between industry and educational institutions. Future initiatives will include research partnerships, talent development programmes, and industry engagement activities to build a skilled workforce suited to Labuan’s evolving economy.

“With these initiatives underway, LCC and CILTM Sabah reaffirmed their commitment to fostering partnerships that accelerate sustainable growth and solidify Labuan’s position as a thriving economic hub,” he said.

Moving forward, LCC, CILTM Sabah will work closely with Labuan Corporation, industry players, relevant government agencies, and academic institutions to ensure Labuan remains a competitive and dynamic economic centre for Malaysia and beyond, Doughty added.
