Malaysia, Italy Aim For Stronger Economic Collaboration, Says Liew

KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Italy seek to strengthen economic collaboration, according to Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong. 

Liew is scheduled to meet Italy’s Deputy Enterprises and Made in Italy Minister Valentino Valentini later today to discuss potential areas of collaboration between the two countries.

“I am meeting the Deputy Minister at 2 pm today at the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), and we aim to strengthen collaboration between Malaysia and Italy, as well as foster greater cooperation between ASEAN and the European Union (EU),” he told reporters after attending the grand launch of Generali Malaysia’s new headquarters here today.

Generali, a global insurance and asset management company founded in Italy in 1831, has a strong presence across Europe and beyond.

Liew emphasised that the strengthening of ties between Malaysia and Italy, as well as between ASEAN and the EU, is crucial, particularly in light of current global economic challenges.

Meanwhile, Generali Asia regional officer Rob Leonardi said that since the company began operations in Malaysia in 2015, the country has rapidly grown into a key market for its business in Asia and an important part of its global operations.

“Generali Malaysia is now one of the largest general insurers and a growing life insurer in the country, serving a diverse customer base of over two million people,” he said.

Also present at the launch were Valentini, Ambassador of Italy to Malaysia Massimo Rustico, and Generali Malaysia chief executive officer Fabrice Benard.
