MITI Calls For More Local Participation In Drone Technology Industry - Liew

30/09/2025 05:15 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has called for more local participation in the drone technology industry.

Its Deputy Minister, Liew Chin Tong, said that local players should adopt drone technology in practical applications to generate real use cases that can drive the growth of the industry.

"Drone technology has developed very rapidly, as we have seen in the Ukraine war and also in developments in China. We (Malaysia) are not necessarily too late because everyone is starting almost at the same time, but we need to develop a full range of capabilities and look towards building use cases as much as possible.

"Most importantly, by developing and applying use cases, we can strengthen our capabilities, drive innovation, and build expertise in both creating and utilising drone technology," he said.

He made the remarks to reporters after launching the DronTech Asia 2025 Opening Ceremony here today.

Liew also said the defence and security sector is an important vertical in drone technology, adding that healthcare and agriculture are key areas to work on.

"Additionally, MITI is supportive of the drone technology industry through our agency, the National Aerospace Industry Corporation Malaysia (NAICO Malaysia)," he said.

Meanwhile, Aerosea Exhibitions Sdn Bhd director Datuk Dr M Ghandi said this year’s DronTech Asia 2025 edition will showcase technologies, a marketplace of ideas, and a launchpad for partnerships.

"Our role as organisers is simple but vital: to provide a trusted platform where governments, businesses, and innovators connect, collaborate, and push boundaries together.

"I encourage you (participants) to engage fully, share generously, and forge collaborations that extend well beyond this hall," he said.

DronTech Asia 2025, held from Sept 30 to Oct 2, 2025, involves the participation of 75 companies from 10 countries, bringing together leading innovators and industry players.
