KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has highlighted that Malaysia is consistently recognised as a trusted global Islamic finance hub, where investors find stability, clarity, and opportunity, reflecting the country’s ethical foundations in the sector.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said Malaysia has pioneered the global sukuk market, led in green and sustainability-linked sukuk, and developed a strong capacity in the takaful sector. It also embraced fintech, as well as digital platforms for zakat and waqf, linking tradition with modern technology.
"The world is searching for financial systems that deliver not just profits, but also purpose. Let us work together to empower our communities by ensuring that financial solutions uplift those in need.
"We must advance ethical and responsible businesses through cross-border partnerships, innovation, and shared prosperity," he said during the opening of the Global Islamic Finance Forum (GIFF) 2025 today.
Also present were Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan and Bank Negara Malaysia governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour.
According to Anwar, Malaysia's leadership in Islamic finance extended to the global stage as the country issued over RM20 billion in sustainable and responsible investment sukuk. "It is clear to the world that our Islamic finance sector is not only thriving, but leading in mobilising capital for green, social and ethical impact," he noted.
The prime minister stressed that the world is entering an era where capital will increasingly be judged not just by the returns it generates, but by the lives it touches and the legacies it leaves behind. "We have shown that Islamic finance can lead this shift - this gross inequality, injustice, and tolerance of all the ills that have affected our societies," he said.
Anwar also highlighted that the Maqasid shariah principle in Islamic finance begins with the issue of good governance. "You will always need to remind us, the leaders, professionals, academia, and the civil servants, to work together to ensure the true aim of the Maqasid. Even in introducing financial instruments and the issue of competitiveness, profits cannot ignore the importance of values, justice, and good governance," he added.
