Sabah Produced 4.27 Mln Tonnes Of CPO In 2024 – MPIC

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 (Bernama) -- Sabah is Malaysia’s largest crude palm oil (CPO) producing state, with a production rate of 4.27 million tonnes in 2024, according to the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (MPIC).

In a written reply published on the Dewan Rakyat portal, the ministry said this amount represents 22.1 per cent of Malaysia’s total CPO output.

"The state also has an oil palm plantation area of over 1.48 million hectares, equivalent to approximately 26.43 per cent of the country’s total oil palm area, with 129 mills operating across Sabah," MPIC said.

The ministry was responding to a question from Datuk Suhaimi Nasir (BN-Libaran) regarding the government's efforts to strengthen the downstream palm oil industry so that Sabah does not rely solely on CPO exports.

According to MPIC, the government is continuously working to reduce dependence on unsustainable CPO exports in the long term.

“This approach not only aims to reduce reliance on exports but also seeks to create more quality job opportunities for local communities,” it said.

The ministry said the government also remains committed to strengthening the development of the downstream palm oil industry in Sabah, particularly in biodiesel production, to add value to the country's agri-commodity sector.

Currently, there are three licensed biodiesel production plants in Sabah, namely Genting Biorefinery Sdn Bhd, SPC Biodiesel Sdn Bhd, and Green Edible Oil Sdn Bhd, with a combined annual capacity of 400,000 tonnes.

“The palm oil biodiesel industry in Sabah also created approximately 160 jobs opportunities for local residents through the establishment of the three biodiesel plants,” the ministry added.
