MITI: 5,149 Public EV Chargers Installed Nationwide

30/10/2025 10:59 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) said that a total of 5,149 public electric vehicle (EV) charging units have been installed nationwide as of Sept 30, 2025.

Of this total, 1,709 units are direct current (DC) chargers, while 3,440 are alternating current (AC) chargers.

“With the current ratio of public EV chargers to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) at one to eight, the existing number of public EV chargers is sufficient to serve around 42,000 registered passenger BEVs to date,” the ministry stated on the Dewan Rakyat portal today.

MITI was responding to Azli Yusof (PH-Shah Alam), who had asked about the number of EV chargers nationwide and the challenges in achieving the target of 10,000 units by the end of 2025.

The ministry noted that although the total count of public EV chargers has yet to meet the target, the deployment of DC chargers has exceeded projections, reaching 114 per cent of the intended 1,500 units.

“This indicates a shift in usage patterns among EV owners, who are increasingly opting for fast-charging services.

“DC chargers are more suitable for users who require quick charging during long-distance travel or on highways,” the ministry added.

Meanwhile, in response to Jimmy Puah Wee Tse (PH-Tebrau) regarding the National Automotive Policy (NAP) 2020, MITI said that road tax exemptions for EVs will end on Dec 31, 2025. Starting Jan 1, 2026, all EVs will be required to pay road tax, which will be based on a new system determined by the vehicle’s motor power.

The ministry said that the new tax rates have been adjusted according to electric motor capacity (kW output) and remain lower than those for internal combustion engine vehicles.

“The government’s policy remains consistent in encouraging the use of energy-efficient and electrified vehicles (xEV), including BEVs.

“The government’s focus is on developing high-value-added economic activities in the country, particularly the local assembly of EVs and the development of domestic vendors for critical EV components such as EV batteries,” the ministry added.
