BATU GAJAH, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- More than 20,000 job opportunities will be created through the Ipoh Sentral development project which is expected to be a major catalyst for Perak's economic growth in the next few years.

Chairman of the Perak Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Transport Committee, Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the high-impact project worth RM6.25 billion would not only make Ipoh an integrated transport hub but also provide specific job opportunities for the highly competent workforce.

“The workforce covers the overall development of Ipoh Sentral, including the collaboration between the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) and KTM Bhd (KTMB) which plays a role in making it a regional transport hub like KL Sentral.

“The (job) opportunities offered cover various segments such as hotels, shopping malls, business complexes and other facilities that support Ipoh Sentral," he said at a press conference after representing the Menteri Besar of Perak in officiating at the 7th Convocation Ceremony of the Malayan Railway Academy (KTM) (MyRA) here today.

Also present were chief technical officer (acting KTMB group chief executive officer) Ahmad Nizam Mohamed Amin and deputy director general of the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) Dr Mohamad Norjayadi Tamam.

On Aug 16, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the 27.3-hectare project was the result of a strategic collaboration between Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) and RAC and was expected to become a new iconic landmark in Ipoh and to be fully completed within 20 years.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Nizar said the project would be developed in phases, with the first phase giving initial emphasis on landscape, heritage and community facilities, followed by the second phase focusing on mixed development such as housing, offices, commercial spaces and hotels.

At today's ceremony, a total of 195 KTMB graduates and 34 Akademi Dalam Industri talent participants successfully obtained the Malaysian Skills Diploma (TVET-I) and the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) after completing their studies of between 12 and 18 months at the Akademi KTM.

Since its establishment in 2016, the Akademi KTM has produced more than 3,000 Malaysian skills graduates who play a role in the operation and maintenance of the country's railways.
