LABUAN, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- Labuan’s port operator, Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd (MPM), said it is open to forging collaborative efforts with Langkawi Port Sdn Bhd (LPSB), particularly in exchanging expertise and best practices in port management.
MPM chief executive officer Idjal Tahir said the collaboration would create opportunities for both duty-free islands to strengthen operational capacity and enhance service delivery in their respective maritime sectors.
He said MPM, operating under the purview of the Labuan Port Authority (LPA), has extensive experience in cargo handling activities, including managing roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessel arrivals that transport imported vehicles into Labuan.
“As a port operator recognised for our efficiency and service quality, MPM strives to continuously improve its operational capabilities.
“Labuan Port handles nearly 70 per cent of cargoes related to the oil and gas (O&G) sector, while the remaining 30 per cent covers edible and non-edible consumer cargoes, transhipment of rice and sugar, as well as construction materials,” he said to Bernama during a working visit by the LPSB and Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) delegates at the Labuan port today.
Idjal added that the recognition from the Labuan Freight Forwarders Association reflects Labuan Port’s strong performance and its commitment to meeting industry expectations.
Meanwhile, LADA deputy chief executive officer Ahmad Fuad Che Ani @ Abd Ghani said both Labuan and Langkawi share similarities as duty-free islands, creating natural grounds for cooperation.
“Although the nature of port operations differs, with Langkawi Port focusing more on local community needs and visitor arrivals, the exchange of expertise between both ports remains a valuable avenue for mutual enhancement,” he said.
Ahmad Fuad, who led the delegation from LADA and LPSB, noted that Langkawi’s port activities are more tourism-centred, but collaborative engagements such as knowledge sharing and operational benchmarking offer benefits to both sides.
