JOHOR BAHRU, Dec 10 (Bernama) -- The radar station at Senai International Airport will be upgraded with Thales’ RSM NG radar system to strengthen air traffic surveillance and ensure the highest levels of safety and operational efficiency.
Thales, a global leader in advanced technologies for the defence, aerospace, cyber and digital sectors, said in a statement that the system is capable of tracking up to 2,000 aircraft at once.
It is also supported by 64 simultaneous data streams to Air Traffic Control Centres, providing seamless coverage for busy airspace.
“Thales, in collaboration with local partner Novatis Resources Sdn Bhd, is upgrading the radar station at Senai International Airport, which is operated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM).
“This modernisation will enhance both the approach surveillance at the airport and surveillance services at the Kuala Lumpur Air Traffic Control Centre,” it said.
The company said Thales’ RSM NG secondary surveillance radar will replace the airport’s existing secondary radar with minimal service disruption, strengthening air traffic control at an airport that handles around five million passengers per year.
Thales will manufacture, deliver and install the RSM NG system along with its Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system.
“Thales will install two ADS-B stations as complementary surveillance solutions to enhance radar coverage and expand air traffic control (ATC) surveillance capabilities,” it added.
According to Thales, the new system will provide other benefits, including greater reliability and resilience in aircraft identification as well as robust cybersecurity protection.
