KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 (Bernama) -- Space42 and Viasat Inc will present updates on their planned direct-to-device (D2D) infrastructure and the priorities for Equatys, their upcoming joint venture, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
The programme marks the first public showcase of Equatys’ technical direction and commercial vision, aimed at accelerating global D2D adoption, according to Space42 in a statement.
This event brings together policymakers, regulators, and industry leaders to explore how competition, resilience, and sovereignty can be advanced simultaneously, along with enabling new business cases, turning space-enabled mobility into a shared success story for all.
Equatys is an independent, neutral, multi-participant shared infrastructure platform designed to extend 3GPP-based connectivity to billions underserved by terrestrial networks. Since its September 2025 announcement, the venture has progressed through initial engineering development and commercial engagement with mobile network operators.
The platform integrates terrestrial and satellite networks for seamless service transitions, preserves operator spectrum rights, and operates on a Tower Co model to deliver cost-efficient satellite capacity. Its infrastructure will include up to 2,800 satellites across 60 orbital planes and three altitude layers.
Space42, a United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based artificial intelligence-powered SpaceTech company, has also announced partnerships to explore Equatys-enabled D2D connectivity with e& UAE, the flagship telecom arm of global technology group e&, and with PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia (Telkomsat), Indonesia's national satellite operator.
As part of MWC, Space42 Managing Director, Karim Sabbagh and Viasat Chief Executive Officer and Chairman, Mark Dankberg will conduct a Fireside Chat to discuss opportunities, policies, and the future of space-enabled mobility.
