KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 (Bernama) -- Black & Veatch, a global leader in human critical infrastructure, has been selected by Formosa Heavy Industry Corporation (FHI) to deliver the full engineering design scope for a 2 x 1200 megawatt (MW) H class combined cycle power plant in Mailiao, Taiwan.
The new gas-fired facility is being developed by Mai-Liao Power Corporation (MPC), which secured a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in 2025. Upon completion, the plant is projected to provide electricity for approximately 1.8 million homes, enhancing regional generation efficiency and energy system resilience.
“Black & Veatch’s selection by MPC and FHI demonstrates the strong technical capabilities and deep project experience we bring to major energy developments across the APAC region,” said its Senior Vice President and Managing Director for APAC & India, Jerin Raj in a statement.
The project involves replacing two expired 25-year-term coal-fired units, which will be dismantled. Black & Veatch was selected following a competitive, selective bidding process for its technical depth and experience in repurposing coal-fired assets.
Black & Veatch’s scope of work awarded by FHI includes conceptual, basic, and detailed engineering design, along with technical support for critical equipment procurement.
The development supports the region's broader strategy of modernising legacy generation assets with cleaner, more efficient technologies and marks an ongoing shift toward lower carbon power.
The facility aligns with the government’s commitment to meet the 2050 net zero emissions pathway and interim regulatory reduction milestones for 2030 to 2035.
This initiative reinforces Black & Veatch’s strategy to support clients throughout the energy transition lifecycle, from planning and advisory through to engineering and execution.
