PORT DICKSON, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- Police have intensified monitoring and enforcement along the Seremban-Port Dickson Highway (SPDH) to check illegal racing and other traffic violations, particularly during weekends.

Port Dickson police chief Supt Maslan Udin said that through integrated operations, police have been arresting individuals involved in such activities on SPDH almost weekly.

"Since the highway is long and straight, it invites dangerous activities, including illegal racing. However, we have increased enforcement operations around the area to curb this problem.

"From the arrests and conversations recorded, we found that most of these people (illegal racers) are outsiders. They come to Port Dickson for sightseeing but race with each other unplanned," he told reporters when they met here today.

He said the number of vehicles entering the district increases to over 60,000 every weekend or public holiday.

Maslan said 48 illegal racing cases were detected along SPDH in the first 10 months of this year, compared to 38 cases in the same period last year.

The number of accidents on the highway increased by one case to 165 cases as of October this year.

He advised the public to obey traffic rules, practise defensive driving and avoid dangerous actions that could disturb other road users.

According to him, the crime index in this tourism district from January to October increased by 14 cases to 201, compared to 187 cases in the same period last year.
