KOTA BHARU, Feb 19 (Bernama) -- The Southeast Brigade of the General Operations Force (GOF) foiled an attempt to smuggle nearly 88,000 coconuts after intercepting two trailers at Stor Che Soh in Kampung Pulau Ular, Tumpat, on Monday.

Its commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said five local men, aged 26 to 43, consisting of drivers and their assistants, who were believed to be the couriers to smuggle the coconuts to Thailand, were also arrested.

He said that the arrest and seizure were carried out by members of the 7th Battalion, at around 12.30 pm, through Op Taring Wawasan, at the location.

“The inspection found that nearly 88,000 coconuts were found in the lorry and the storage area, without valid coconut purchase documents and licences.

"The estimated total value of the seizure amounted to RM2.13 million, including the vehicles, and the case is being investigated under the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) Act 1965,” he said in a statement, today.

He said that all suspects and the seized items were taken to FAMA for further action.
