BINTULU, April 20 (Bernama) -- An elderly man suffered burns to his back while two other people escaped unhurt when a fire occurred at a house in Taman Medan Ginseng, Jalan Sibiyu here early this morning.
According to a Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department spokesman, the victim, Yew Hing Kuong, 65, was given first aid at the scene before he was sent to Nyabau Hospital for further treatment.
"Two other residents, Cheng Guat Sien, 88, and a woman named Lili Rinus escaped unhurt,” the spokesman said in a statement today.
The department received a distress call about the fire at 3.49 am and 13 firefighters and an engine from the Bintulu Fire and Rescue Station rushed to the scene, located about four kilometres away.
“The fire involved a semi-permanent structure, which was an additional structure attached to a double storey terrace house. The entire structure, measuring 4.57 x 7.31 square metres was completely destroyed,” they said.
The fire was put out by 4.53 am and the cause of the fire, along with the losses, were still being investigated.
