EX-CONTRACT WORKER FINED RM26,000 FOR HIDING FUNDS IN CRYPTOCURRENCY SCAM

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- A former contract worker was fined a total of RM26,000 by two Sessions Courts here today after pleading guilty to concealing RM365,500 involving a fraudulent cryptocurrency investment scheme last January.

Judge Azrul Darus sentenced Mah Wai Chun, 22, to a fine of RM14,000 or 12 months’ imprisonment for concealing RM225,500 belonging to an individual that was deposited into the accused’s bank account at a condominium in Mont Kiara here on Jan 7.

He was charged under Section 424 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of five years’ imprisonment, or a fine, or both.

In another court, Judge Norma Ismail sentenced Mah to a fine of RM12,000 or four months’ imprisonment for concealing RM140,000 belonging to another individual that was deposited into the account of MWC Max Crest Builders Sdn Bhd, a company registered under his name.

The offence was committed at a condominium in Bukit Pantai, Bangsar, here between Jan 6 and 13, under the same section.

Deputy Public Prosecutors M. Saravanan and Batrisyia Mohd Khusri urged the court to impose a commensurate sentence given the public interest and frequency of such offences, while the accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency, citing that only his father is working and supporting two younger siblings still in school.

According to the facts of the case, one of the victims lodged a police report after being cheated in a cryptocurrency investment scheme, in which he had deposited money into a bank account that was later found to belong to the accused.
