SOLDIER KILLED, SIX OTHERS INJURED IN MENORA ARMY TRUCK CRASH

IPOH, Oct 1 (Bernama) -- A soldier was killed while six others were injured when an army truck skidded at KM257 of the North-South Expressway (northbound) after the Menora Tunnel, here today.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Sayani Saidon said the department received a distress call at 4.59 pm, and teams from the Kuala Kangsar and Meru Raya Fire and Rescue Stations were dispatched to the scene.

“Five victims were extricated before the fire engines arrived, while two victims were trapped at the rear of the vehicle.

“The deceased victim was extricated at 5.54 pm, while another injured victim was freed at 6.14 pm,” she said in a statement.

The victims were sent to Kuala Kangsar Hospital and Taiping Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, Kuala Kangsar police chief ACP Heisham Harun said the truck belonging to the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) skidded and plunged into a ravine. 

"Preliminary police investigations at the scene revealed that the MAF truck lost control, veered to the left side of the road, overturned, and plunged into a ravine some 20 feet deep.

"As a result of the accident, two victims sustained serious injuries, four suffered minor injuries, and one individual was confirmed dead at the scene," he said in a statement.

He urged anyone with information related to the accident to contact the investigating officer for Legal/Prosecution Traffic, Kuala Kangsar District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, Insp Amaliena Azman, at 05-7762222.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
