PUTRAJAYA, Oct 18 (Bernama) -- More than 250,000 students from schools and institutions of higher learning, as well as community leaders, took part in 1,081 fire education and prevention programmes organised by the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) from Oct 9 to 11 across the country.
JBPM director-general Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohamad said the programmes are part of ongoing efforts to cultivate a fire safety culture within the community.
“A total of 1,081 programmes have been implemented nationwide, featuring various awareness and educational activities related to fire prevention,” he told reporters after opening the 2025 Fire Prevention Day Carnival here today.
He said the achievement reflects a growing level of public awareness about the importance of fire safety and preventive measures.
“We believe that instilling a culture of fire safety is the most effective way to prevent fires from occurring,” he said.
“The second point is that if a fire occurs, the community or its members can take the necessary steps to respond promptly, particularly in rescuing victims,” he said.
Earlier in his speech, Nor Hisham highlighted three key pillars of fire prevention, namely education, culture and enforcement.
“Everything starts with knowledge. Our goal is to cultivate a generation and a community that not only understands fire safety but also acts instinctively when the situation demands.
“The seeds of fire safety knowledge have been sown from early childhood education and continue through to the wider community,” he added.
Regarding the carnival, Nor Hisham said it serves as a platform for education and public awareness in a more relaxed, community-friendly environment, aimed at reinforcing a sense of shared responsibility in preventing fires.
